Definition of "Class of …"
You are listed with your friends

"Class of ..." is defined by the year when
your form left the Prep.

If you left before the final year (called Form 8 in recent years) you are recognised as being with your year-group friends who left at the end of Form 8.

E.g.  If you left from Form 6 in July 1991  you are in the class of  '93.   Simple?

The 'Class of…' lists are transcribed directly from contemporaneous newsletters.  Comments are recent additions, believed to be true

Do write or email and tell us when you were here and what you are doing now.

Send a picture if you have one.  Mention any other old pupils you have kept in contact with.

The ANSWER is in the Class of '52

Robert Newton ('73)

Robert has been in touch and wishes to swap memories with other old boys from the 1960s who might remember him.  He used to live in Pinewood Avenue, Sevenoaks and is now working  as a Project Manager in the North East of England.  See the 1960 pages.

Daniel Palmer ('04)

I hope you saw the news item on the Prep Home page about Daniel.  In case you missed it I have copied it below:

Having won the Heron Class Southern Championship earlier in the season Old Boy
Daniel Palmer (Class of 2004) and his helm Martin Treadway went on to sail in the Heron National Championship 2005.

Daniel's best result was in second place, but the pair achieved an overall position of
third in the series.

Daniel was very pleased with the result of his first National Competition, but is already planning to do even better next year.

Daniel sails at Chipstead Sailing Cub which is where Olympic Silver Medalist Ian Walker, another Old Boy, began his sailing career; so we hope that Daniel follows in Ian's footsteps.

Ted Prangnell ('44)

Ted's letter on the 1940s pages is well worth reading.  He recalls Vine Court Road days with (mostly) affection.

Here are two posers from Ted:

  • Does anybody remember the 'Pifflesnonker', and the teacher who used it?
  • What was the 'Crow's Nest'?

Answers directly to Ted (and the Web Editor as well please!)

Matt Wright ('00)

Matt is looking for the email addresses for people from the Millennium class (such as Nicholas Fitzgerald, Alex Mills, Jamie May, etc).

He would love to keep in contact.  Please email him directly (see the Class of 2000 page) or send them to this site for general publication

Frank Brett  ('50)  Asks

Dear Alan,

I trust that you and yours enjoyed the Christmas celebration.

I have some questions.

  • First Form was named for the teacher. I have read the staff list but nothing rings a bell.
  • Second form was called 'remove' anyone know why?
  • Sixth form was very small, same size as Mr Juke's study beneath, so a number of pupils must have moved on from Fifth form.
  • My 1:25 000 map of Sevenoaks (1974) shows no school or church on Vine Court Road but shows a school on the East side of a road one block East of there. What gives?
  • I am wondering if any pictures exist of 3 Vine Court as a school, perhaps pictures taken during Speech Day or the like? Also has anyone approached the present owners of 3 Vine Court for a photo tour of the house restored to it's former glory?

Please excuse the nostalgia oozing from my computer!

All the Best, Frank

Miles Norman Jukes

Thanks to everyone who helped track down Mr Jukes names.
Miles Norman Jukes (1887-1957) was headmaster of Ghyll Royd Prep School in Yorkshire from 1923 to 1928.  He took over as headmaster at the Prep in 1928, probably at the start of the Summer Term.

Follow the story through the following links:
The Prep Timeline

The Prep Alumni pages for the 1920s, the 1930s, the 1940s and the 1950s.

Did Miles Jukes choose the colours for the school uniform?  Prospective parents visiting the school the other day asked us this question !  The father had himself been a pupil at Ghyll Royd School (small world) some year ago; he was struck by the similarity in school uniforms.  Now, does anyone know where the Prep colours came from?

Wendy Sutherland writes from Ghyll Road Prep School:

We are in the process of putting all our archive material onto CD and would really like to know Mr Jukes forenames - we don't know very much about him at all. Is this the same man, even!!

Do you remember his Christian names and do you recognise him on the above photos with Mrs. Jukes?

Please email sutherlandwj@blueyonder.co.uk.

Many thanks.
